A Wildcard is a unique type of variant, appearing in both the original Viva Piñata and Trouble in Paradise.

Wildcard variants are independent from the usual color variants, meaning a piñata can have one, both or neither type of variant.

Mechanics

The method to gain a wildcard is very different between the two games. In Viva Piñata, obtaining a wildcard is almost entirely dependent on luck. In Trouble in Paradise, a wildcard is given when a player achieves a Master Romancer award for a given piñata while getting every heart in the romancing minigame.

Viva Piñata

A wildcard can randomly hatch from an egg while romancing piñatas. The chance of a wildcard is initially one in 10,000 (0.01%) but increases with the number of times a wildcard is romanced, or if one or both parents are wildcards.

Viva Piñata: Trouble in Paradise

If there are 6 or more of the same species in the garden, romancing that species will trigger a special, harder version of the romancing minigame where you only have one life. The hearts will flash during the minigame if obtaining a wildcard is possible. To get a wildcard, every heart in the minigame must be collected.

In this game, there are 3 possible wildcards. Two are obtainable on a user's account, while the third variant that the player did not unlock will need to be given by another user. The second variant you unlock is random.
